Script and Production Analysis for Master of Theatre Studies

Michael J. Hume is in his 22nd season as an actor with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.  In 2013 he will appear in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM and THE HEART OF ROBIN HOOD., and be a participant in the OSF Playwrites Lab, which examines and develops new work.  Michael is a member of the Actors' Equity Association and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. A founding member of the Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany NY, he directed TheNorman Conquests, Private Lives, House of Blue Leaves, Glass Menagerie, and What the Butler Saw. For SOU, Michael adapted and directed Dick Whittington and His Amazing Cat in 2009 and Karel Capek's The White Plague in 2006, and directed Tom Kempinski's Duet for One in 1997. In 1996 he directed Three Hotels for OSF. Michael has also directed for Oregon Cabaret Theatre (OCT).

Michael is a published playwright. Dogpark: The Musical, which he co-wrote the Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner, premiered last season at the Milwaukee Repertory to sold-out houses. Their previous collaboration, the musical They Came From Way Out There!,premiered at OCT in 2004 and was produced in Milwaukee WI and Portland OR.

Michael was on faculty at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY for five years teaching acting, voice, and directing. He is a popular Elderhostel instructor at SOU and has taught voice for the actor in the SOU undergraduate program as an adjunct professor. Michael graduated from the advanced training program at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. He also studied at Professional Theatre Workshop in Hollywood CA and with Uta Hagen at HB studios in New York City.

Roles at OSF include Verges in Much Ado about Nothing, Leo Gordon in Paradise Lost, Maitreya in The Clay Cart, Egeon in The Comedy of Errors, Pingitzer and Nimmo in Tracy's Tiger, Stephano in The Tempest, Mr. van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank, Faker Englund in Room Service, Sir George Thunder in Wild Oats, Lloyd Dallas in Noises Off, Ludie in The Trip to Bountiful, Banjo in The Man Who Came to Dinner, Wong in The Good Person of Szechuan, Emil in Three Viewings, Mr. Antrobus in The Skin of Our Teeth, and Macbeth in Macbeth, as well as roles in King John, The Belle's Stratagem, The Royal Family, Oedipus Complex, Richard III, Three Sisters, Henry V, Vilna's Got a Golem, The Magic Fire, A Touch of the Poet, The Winter's Tale, The Pool of Betheseda, Cymbeline, Mad Forest, and The Conclusion of Henry VI.

Work at other regional theatres include Woyzeck, Julius Caesar (Hartford Stage Company); The Cherry Orchard, Twelfth Night, Happy End, The Norman Conquests (Capital Repertory Theatre); as well as seasons with American Conservatory Theater and South Coast Repertory. New York work includes Fun and Nobody (Manhattan Punchline), A Play of Consciousness (Manhattan Theatre Club). Michael appeared as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol for the International Theatre in Vienna.
