First Lighting and Sound Design Faculty for Master of Theatre Studies

Professor Chris Sackett holds more than thirty years of professional experience in the performing arts. He began teaching at SOU in 1987. He worked as a technical director, production manager, stage manager and program director at Britt Festivals over an eleven-year period, and as a lighting designer and stage electrician at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for four seasons. Chris also worked as a theatre consultant for a variety of construction projects including the remodeling of the 750-seat Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford. As a lighting designer he has designed more than seventy-five theatrical performances and eighty dance pieces. At SOU, Chris teaches sound design and engineering courses, lighting design, production analysis, theatre foundations, and play-reading courses in addition to his duties as a production manager. He recently completed nine years as department chair. He developed the program sound and lighting design curriculums and has more than thirty sound designs to his credit. He holds a BFA from Southern Oregon University and an MFA in lighting and sound design from the University of British Columbia.

What our students say:

  • "Chris does a great job at letting us discover answers instead of just informing us of a right answer."
  • "Chris is incredibly knowledgeable and eager to help students increase their knowledge."
  • "His help was unbelievable. I feel that I can really take back this knowledge and understanding of lighting back to the classroom. Thank you Chris!"
