COMPONENTS OF A BACHELOR'S DEGREE
UNIVERSITY STUDIES (SOU's General Education)
University Studies is a streamlined curriculum that offers a vital, focused, and enriched general education program, and is the foundation of the liberal arts degree. University Studies reflects the statewide Oregon University System initiative to shape courses to meet defined student-learning outcomes. University Studies also reflects the Oregon Transfer Module, designed to simplify transfers among the state’s institutions of higher education.
University Studies also prepares you for advanced work in your academic majors and to earn a bachelor’s degree. It is your responsibility to know and complete these requirements. The following can be used as a guide to the successful completion of your degree at SOU.
The Course Catalog and Degreeworks outline your university studies requirements.
MAJORS, MINORS, or CERTIFICATES]
All SOU students pursue a major - focused area of study. Minors and certificates are smaller supplemental focused areas of study that complement a student's major. Review a full list of SOU's academic programs here. For most students, minors and certificates are optional. Check with your major advisor or student success coordinator to see if your major requires a minor or other supplemental learning experience.
ELECTIVES
Electives are any courses that are in addition to students' University Studies, major, minor or certificate requirements. A bachelors degree requires 180 quarter credits to graduate, and electives count towards your overall total credits.
DEGREE OPTIONS
Most majors can choose either a Bachelors of Arts or Bachelors of Science. See catalog for more info on these requirements and other special degree options.
