The art history program introduces students to a broad range of topics covering all forms of expression in the visual arts. The emphasis of the program is on contextual art history whereby the production of art is viewed from within a social, political, and economic context.

The program looks at the history of art beyond merely artistic styles and aesthetic theories, exploring ways in which art and its audience are affected by social dynamics of a given time period.

Courses such as Activist Art and Art, Culture, and Technology demonstrate how art functions in the world of contemporary society, while courses such as the History of Italian Renaissance Art unite the visual arts with philosophy, theology, and literature to demonstrate how a particular era forms the foundations of modern thought. Specially equipped classrooms allow art history professors to present material using the latest in audio-visual technology.
