The SOU Department of Biology has access to unique resources in this area, which has been characterized as one of the most interesting biotic regions in western North America. Biology majors acquire an understanding of basic scientific knowledge and apply that knowledge to fieldwork at the Pacific Ocean, Crater Lake, the Klamath-Tule marshes, the redwood forests, and the Oregon desert. Biology Department faculty emphasize field and laboratory experiences, as well as research.

SOU biology majors have access to the second largest invertebrate collection in the state, a well-maintained herbarium, a greenhouse, an extensive vertebrate natural history collection, and a new Biotechnology Center.
