In addition to his faculty position at SOU, Kurt holds key positions with local governments and private businesses. He is the City Attorney for Jacksonville, Talent, and Phoenix, Oregon. Kurt also serves as general counsel for Rogue Valley Association of Realtors, Southern Oregon Multiple Listing Service, and Apple Peddler Restaurants. He provides legal advice and services for a wide range of other businesses, including Butler Automotive Group and Falcon Northwest Computer Systems. His legal practice focuses primarily on business, government, and land use law. Kurt has also held executive positions at large organizations managing general services, contracting, business development, planning and construction.

Kurt's legal accomplishments include a key win in the Oregon Supreme Court significantly broadening the right of Oregon cities and counties to raise additional revenue for general public services. He recently authored extensive updates to the Cyberlaw chapter in The Handbook of Technology Management. He has a passion for assisting non-profit organizations, and has served as Chair of the Gibbs Bequest Committee for the American Heart Association, President of the Cairn Terrier Club of America (a member of the American Kennel Club), and board member on several non-profit corporations including the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation and the Ashland YMCA. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation in 2000.

When not enjoying his passion for law and teaching, Kurt likes to travel, write, and spend time with his wife and children at their home in Jacksonville.
