What is an MBA?

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a widely recognized degree highly sought after by those looking to gain an edge in the business world.

The MBA is open to individuals from a wide range of academic disciplines who have previously completed a bachelor's degree.

An MBA education provides students a broad knowledge base in all the major functions and practices of a business (accounting, marketing, finance, operations management, organizational behavior, economics, and information systems) and further develops managerial skill sets and core competencies necessary for business success. Against this backdrop, the critical topics of leadership, teamwork, ethics, and effective communication are embedded in the program to further broaden skills necessary to become more effective managers. The SOU MBA program is accredited through the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

The SOU Difference

SOU offers a high quality education in a small classroom environment. All our classes are taught directly by our expert faculty who bring extensive knowledge, dedication and industry experience to the program.

We offer our students the added benefits of a cohort system, which means you begin the MBA program with a group of students and continue throughout the program with those same students. Working in a cohort-based program has proven incredibly rewarding and has many advantages for developing future business leaders. The skill set of working productively on projects with colleagues will prove invaluable as you enter into new and changing job markets.

Out of 130 schools tested each year, SOU consistently scores in the top 25% on the Major Field Test. This is the only test of its kind to measure MBA student aptitude in universities all around the country.

One Program, Two Formats

The MBA program at SOU is offered in two formats designed to meet the needs of busy working professionals. Students for both programs can begin in any term. While the two programs have the same curricular requirements, students choose and stay in the same format until completion. A one-time change may be allowed, however.

  • Evening MBA Program (Ashland Campus)
    • Classes are offered weekday evenings at the SOU Ashland campus.
    • Program may be completed in one calendar year (4 quarters: fall, winter, spring, summer)

·       Online MBA Program

o   May be completed in 16 months (6-7 consecutive quarters: fall, winter, spring, summer, fall, winter, spring)

Full-Time MBA Course Plan for the Evening Program

Applicants planning to complete the evening program in one year must start the program in the fall,. MBA core courses for the full-time MBA program are taught primarily Mondays through Thursdays in the late afternoons and evenings on the Ashland campus, and sometimes on Saturdays at the Higher Education Center in Medford or at the Ashland Campus. Offered once section in the same term each year, the core MBA courses are taught in sequence beginning in fall quarter. This program may be completed in one calendar year (fall, winter, spring, summer) if all core courses are successfully completed during the year. Elective courses are offered in various formats (face-to-face day or evening, online, hybrid).

Part-Time MBA Course Plan for the Evening Program

Participants take two or three courses each term. The program follows the SOU academic calendar which allows for periodic breaks between quarters.

Both the full time and part-time MBA evening programs are designed on a cohort model; all participants start and proceed through the program together. The part-time program requires 18 to 21 months to complete. Core MBA courses are taught in sequence for six consecutive quarters (fall, winter, spring, summer, fall, and winter. Elective courses are offered in various formats (online, hybrid, face-to-face Saturdays or weekday evenings) and must be discussed with and approved by the MBA program coordinator.

Concentration Option:

MBA candidates in the Evening Program can select a group of elective courses to comprise a concentration area. The Program offers eight concentration areas: Business Analytics, Finance, Information Analysis and Decision Making, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Nonprofit, Accounting, and Arts Management.

Generalist Option:

Students who do not choose to have a concentration area may choose any course from the list of approved electives.

Whether or not a student is pursuing a concentration option, the total number of elective credits completed must be at least 12.
