When and where is Commencement?
Commencement 2017 will be held on Saturday, June 17, at Mountain Arena (Raider Stadium). Processional will begin at 8:45am and the ceremony will begin at 9:00am.
What time do I show up for Commencement and where do I check in?
Gates open at 7:00am and graduate check-in will also begin at this time on the field next to Mountain Arena (Raider Stadium). Graduates will need to be lined up for the procession by 8:30am.
How long does the Commencement ceremony last?
Actual length depends upon how many graduating students attend, but the ceremony typically lasts for approximately two to three hours.
What kind of seating is available for guests?
General seating in the grandstands and bleachers on both sides of the arena is available on a first-come basis. Special seating areas, outside and inside, will be available for elderly guests or those with disabilities. This seating is available on a first-come basis and limited to one escort per guest.
Where is the best place to park?
The best place to park is on the SOU campus in one of the two main parking lots off of Mountain Avenue. Shuttle service will be provided from Mountain Avenue to Mountain Arena (Raider Stadium) and will run every 15 minutes. Maps and information are available on the directions and parking page.
How do I know if I am eligible to walk at Commencement?
To be eligible to walk at Commencement, you must either have graduated in the immediately preceding fall or winter term, or have an approved degree application for spring or summer term. If you have not applied to graduate, you are not eligible to walk. Students who have approved degree applications are eligible to walk if they will complete all degree requirements by the end of summer term. Student with a deficient stamp on their application will not be permitted to walk in Commencement. Address your deficiencies ASAP and email email@example.com to get your degree application back on track. Students who have coursework or requirements to complete after the summer term will be eligible to walk the following year (June 2018).

I am eligible to walk at Commencement. Do I need to RSVP or register to participate in Commencement?
You do not need to RSVP or register to participate in Commencement as long as you have applied to graduate (see previous question). However, if you applied to graduate by May 1 and haven't received an email confirmation that your application was received, please check with Enrollment Services at Graduation@sou.edu. Students applying to graduate after May 1 may still be able to participate, but inclusion of your name in the printed Commencement program is not guaranteed. Students applying after this date who want to walk need to check with the ESC for eligibility to walk prior to June 10. Graduating students need to order their cap and gowns from the University Bookstore as soon as possible.
Will there be a rehearsal for graduates before the ceremony?
There isn't a rehearsal, but you must check-in before the ceremony to receive instructions and find your place in the graduate line-up.
Will the ceremony be broadcast or streamed? Will videos be available?
Commencement 2017 will be broadcast on RVTV for local cable subscribers and available by live stream on their web site. After the ceremony, the video will be available free on demand or on DVD or VHS for a small duplicating fee.
Are graduate students hooded at the Commencement ceremony? Do graduate students carry their hood or wear it?
Graduate students are not hooded at the ceremony. They should wear their hood to the ceremony.
How do I order my cap and gown, announcements, and class ring?
The SOU Bookstore provides the information and merchandise you'll need for graduation.
Are tickets needed for guests to attend the commencement ceremony?
Guests do NOT need tickets, but graduates should inform their guests that parking and seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Plan ahead and arrive early!
