SOU Pre-college Programs for Underrepesented Youth

Below is a summary of some of the Pre-College Youth programs that we offer to students from underrepresented backgrounds. For more information about these programs, please click here.

Academia Latina Academia Latina is a summer academic residential program for Latino Youth in southern Oregon. The program offers of a broad range of classes, lectures, cultural experiences, and recreational activities for Latino students who have completed grades 7 through 11. Students selected for the residential camp will live on campus at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. They will interact with other Latino students from throughout southern Oregon while being challenged by creative, imaginative instructors and activities.

Latino Family Day or Dia Familiar A visitation day (Preview Day) designed for Latino families where they will become acquainted with the SOU campus, resources available to students and support staff. Sessions will be offered in Spanish for parents and bilingually for students, where families including prospective students in 8th-12th grade will get the opportunity to participate in a variety of sessions focused on high school and college preparation and success.

Pirates to Raiders is a program that strives to engage Hispanic students in the Phoenix- Talent School District with supports to access a university education at Southern Oregon University. The partnership of students, their families, the school district, and the university will help to ensure a strong and viable future for both the Rogue Valley and the State of Oregon. This partnership will leverage resources to prepare students for college course work as well as provide assistance and mentoring through application and financial aid processes.

Bulldogs to Raiders is a program that strives to engage Hispanic students in the Medford School District with supports to access a university education at Southern Oregon University. The partnership of students, their families, the school district, and the university will help to ensure a strong and viable future for both the Rogue Valley and the State of Oregon. This partnership will leverage resources to prepare students for college course work as well as provide assistance and mentoring through application and financial aid processes.

Cesar Chavez Leadership Conference  The conference is a gathering of Latinx high school students/leaders from regional high schools. The goal of the day-long César E. Chávez Leadership Conference is to increase Latinx high school students’ preparation to become leaders and develop their knowledge about contemporary issues within the Latinx community. In addition, the conference strongly encourages Latino youth to pursue educational opportunities beyond high school. Konoway Nika Tillicum (‘All My Relations’ in Chinook Jargon) is an academic and cultural support program for Native American Students who have completed grades 6-12. Students selected for Konaway will stay on the Southern Oregon University campus in Ashland and will interact with other Native American students while being challenged by creative, imaginative instructors and activities.
