To receive any form of federal aid, you must be formally admitted to Southern Oregon University with the intention of pursuing a degree. Students attending for the sole purpose of additional coursework and who have no degree goal are not eligible for aid. This includes certificates and licenses.
Aid recipients must be U.S. citizens, holders of permanent resident visas, or other eligible refugees. Aid recipients cannot be in default on a federal loan or owe a refund on a grant. Male students must register for Selective Service.
The requirements for a student to become independent for aid purposes are stringent. To receive independent status under the age of 24, you must be one of the following:
- a veteran;
- an orphan, ward of the court or in foster care;
- a graduate student; or
- supporting your own dependent children or other dependents who live with you;
- emancipated minor;
- in legal guardianship;
- homeless or an unaccompanied youth.
