Academic Interests and Background

Contemporary French and Francophone literature, the French novel, French film, Contemporary French culture, Globalization.

Dr. Morris has been at SOU since 1982, where he served as Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and in 2006-7 as interim Dean of the School of Arts and Letters.  He currently directs the SOU French Summer Language Institute for high school teachers, co-directs the SOU Campus Theme series, and is Director of the Arts and Humanities Council at SOU.  Dr. Morris is a certified French Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester and trainer for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), and also has ACTFL certifications as a Writing Proviciency Test rater (WPT) and as a computer-based Oral Proficiency Interview rater (OPIc).  He served for two years as Resident Director of the Oregon University System study abroad programs in Poitiers and Lyon, France, taught at the Angers, France study abroad site, and remains an active supporter of the exchange programs. In addition to his teaching and research interests, he founded and directed for ten years the Southern Oregon Foreign Language Articulation project, a regional collaborative between secondary and postsecondary language teachers, which has received nearly $500,000 in federal grant support. He has published articles or given conference presentations on French literature, film, culture, and language pedagogy, as well as the impacts of globalization on culture.
