Drs. Kimberly and Michael Hoyt began their optometry careers in large, institutional-style practices. They felt overwhelmed and unsatisfied with that style of practice and wanted to do it differently. The Hoyts wanted to be able to connect with their patients and provide personalized service. Artisan Eyeworks offers the technology and expertise gained from the larger practice perspective, but without the hustle and rush to see as many patients as possible in one day. Additionally, they carry a beautiful line of stylish, designer eyeware.

Artisan Eyeworks operates from three pillars of philosophy:

  • Genuine connections
  • Individualized care
  • Modern technology

Dr. Kimberly Hoyt was looking for a QuickBooks™ class and stumbled upon the SOU SBDC website. Their introduction to what SOU SBDC offers came at the Rogue Valley Business Resource Fair held in the fall. They have since attended a number of Lunch, Learn, and Launch seminars and continue regular advising sessions with Stephanie Hoffman, their SOU SBDC advisor.

When asked if they would recommend SBDC to others, they are adamant advocates saying that the “[SBDC and its services] is an unappreciated resource. These kinds of resources are helpful when you don’t know what you don’t know. Stephanie was instrumental in helping us get our ducks in the right row.” And, to those of you thinking of starting your own business, “SBDC can simplify the process.”

The Hoyts have come to realize that it is important to have a team supporting you, like your accountant, bookkeeper, SBDC Business Advisor, branding consultant, the Chamber, the local business community, and employees. These relationships have blossomed into friendships that are supportive and nurturing. Their team is an integral part of the business, especially their employees, Kate and Megan, who think of Artisan Eyeworks as their own. Dr. Michael Hoyt says, “We’re all proud of what we’ve all created. There’s a piece of all of us in this.”
