Productivity & Carbon Dynamics in Changing Arctic

Join us in welcoming SOU Alumnus, Maggie Buktenica, M.S.

Maggie received her B.S. in biochemistry at SOU in 2013, then went on to earn her M.S. in Ocean Ecology and Biogeochemistry at Oregon State University, College of Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences.

In her lecture, Maggie will discuss her graduate research studying marine biological production along the western continental margin of the Arctic Ocean and how it might change in response to warming. Warmer air temperatures in the Arctic, due to climate change, are causing decreased sea ice thickness, less ice coverage and longer ice-free seasons. These changes are altering the ecology and biogeochemistry of the Arctic, including how warming may influence the Arctic Ocean’s role as a “sink” for atmospheric CO2.

The lecture will be held in the Science Auditorium (Science Building room 151) on Friday, November 10th from 3:30 - 5:00 pm. *Refreshments will be provided by the STEM Division.*
