Andres Alcala was selected as a "future leader" by the New Generations Program, a grant initiative cooperatively designed by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Theatre Communications Group (TCG). In August 2007, he began his association with mentor David Saar, Childsplay's artistic director in Tempe, Ariz . Alcala will work on new play development, including dramaturgy, script evaluation and planning playwright workshops, to better serve the Childsplay's growing Latino audience. He will also teach classes at the Childsplay Academy, co-direct with Mr. Saar, and will direct a touring or main stage production during the second year of the mentorship.

Alcala served as Artistic Director of CITE Educational Theatre in Portland, Ore., from 2002 until 2007 when CITE merged with Insight Out Theatre and became Insight Out Theatre Collective.

As a director, he received a Drammy from the Portland Drama Awards in 2007 for his direction of David Saar's The Yellow Boat at the Insight Out Theatre Collective and in 2002 for his direction of Shakespeare's R&J at Triangle Productions. In 2004, Alcala directed the Triangle Productions version of Edward II where nine actors doubled to cover 50 roles. In 2001, he received the AriZoni Award in Phoenix, Ariz., for Best Director for Ashley Davidson's Fruit Salad presented by PlayWright’s Theatre.

He is currently performing in John Cariani's Almost, Maine (2008) at the Phoenix Theatre. In 2006 and 2007, Alcala performed in Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses at Nearly Naked Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz., and in Love! Valour! Compassion!,The Laramie Project, A Question of Mercy, and Touch at the Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland, Ore. He performed Guillermo Reyes' one-man show Men On The Verge 2: The Self Esteem Files at the Miracle Theatre in Portland, Ore., for which he received a Drammy Award for Best Actor in 2006. He received an AriZoni award for his performance in Men on the Verge of a His-Panic Breakdown at the PlayWright's Theatre in 2001.

He has also performed with Profile Theatre in the Lisbon Traviata, and in Jose Rivera's Sueno at Borderlands Theatre in 2001. Alcala worked for several seasons as an actor with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, both in the company and on OSF's educational outreach school tour.
