David R. Humphrey, Ph.D
Director, Department of Performing Arts
One moment, one experience, one sublime afternoon can tilt your destiny. For Dr. David R. Humphrey, it was a sixth-grade field trip to a soon-to-be-demolished movie house, where 100 St. Petersburg Symphony musicians inspired the awestruck child to pursue a lifelong career in the performing arts. After earning his bachelor of music education and certificate in flute at Florida State University, Humphrey completed a master of music education and educational administration the next year, swiftly followed by a PhD in opera production/music education.
Humphrey founded and ran the music department at the University of Houston at Victoria and launched a community education program there, as well as starting the community’s first orchestra. He was the founding dean at the Florida School of the Arts at St. John’s River Community College, Florida’s first state-supported professional arts school for high school and college students.
In succeeding years, he served in leadership and consulting roles at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, New York City Opera, Corcoran Museum of Art, Museum of Performance & Design, California Center for the Arts in Escondido, and Washington Bach Consort. As the founder and director of the AlphaCentauri Production Group, he was commissioned by the White House and National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts to direct and produce the annual Salute to the Presidential Scholars Show for 25 years in a row.
