The Schneider Museum of Art is excited to offer a FREE Family Day with a focus on poetry, led by Creative Writing professor Robert Arellano. Join in on the fun on Saturday, March 11 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Poetry workshops will be presented in a dual language format and augmented with activities for families to explore the current Shapes of Curiosity Creative Arts faculty exhibition.
Writer and Southern Oregon University professor Robert Arellano and a group of great poetry-facilitators are offering a FREE Family Day activity: drop-in, dual-language poetry workshops based on Levi Romero's "Where I’m From / De donde yo soy." Professor Arellano says, “I love teaching poetry writing in both Spanish and English! Dual-language differs from bilingual in that the materials and instruction are available equally in two languages, so you only need to know one or the other to get all the benefits.”
Poet Levi Romero gave a public reading at the Schneider Museum of Art in 2012, the same year New Mexico named him the State Centennial Poet. In the creative activity that Romero created around “Where I’m From / De donde yo soy,” everyone gets to tell the story of their own origins in a fun poem or a series of pictures. Poems and artwork created by families on FREE Family Day will be shared on the Museum’s social media during the week of World Poetry Day, which is March 21, 2017.
The poetry workshops will be augmented with hands-on and exploration activities in the Museum designed to engage families in the exhibition. The exhibition on view is Shapes of Curiosity, the SOU Creative Arts Faculty Exhibition curated by Kelly Worman to complement the Southern Oregon University Center for the Humanities 2016-2017 Campus Theme.
Robert Arellano was born in a family of Cuban immigrants and is the author of six books and an online novel. He is a Professor of Creative Writing at Southern Oregon University and a regular instructor at Southern Oregon’s annual César Chávez Leadership Conference, where in 2015 he delivered the keynote speech.
The Schneider Museum of Art’s FREE Family Days is sponsored by an Economic, Cultural, Tourism & Sustainability Grant from the City of Ashland. Please call 541-552-6245 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
