Ultimate Frisbee Outdoors (UFO) is a new club on campus that offers students a chance to play ultimate frisbee, outdoors. UFO meets once a week on Thursdays from 4 pm - 6 pm at the Recreation Fields here on campus, the club is open to all students, regardless of experience level.
Ultimate frisbee, also known as Ultimate, has grown since it was invented in 1968, often associated with the counterculture of the 60’s and 70’s. The game has grown and become its own viable sport with teams in high schools, colleges, and different national league teams all around the world! This sport takes a true team effort and tremendous amounts of strategy and energy to be able to keep the disc in the air. The discs used in ultimate are usually 175 grams and are called "Frisbees," which were developed by Wham-O after it had become a trend among college students at Yale to pass around a pie tin from the nearby pie shop: The Frisbie Pie Company.
Ultimate is unique, in which the sport doesn’t have officials present during a match because the game sticks to a code of sportsmanship that expects every player to know the rules and make their own calls when an infraction is made. This is the "Spirit of the Game," which is a term used in the rules of ultimate that states that "Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player." Sometimes mistakes and arguments happen, but grace and respect always prevail.
