2017 - 2018 Program Information
Southern Oregon University (SOU) and the University of Guanajuato (UG) offer simultaneously the Master in Management at SOU, and the “Maestría en Alta Gestión” (Master in Management) at the University of Guanajuato to provide UG students with an educational option that allows them to obtain the degree of both institutions while living and working in Mexico. Participants completing the program earn a dual Master in Management degree (MM) from Southern Oregon University and the University of Guanajuato. The dual degree agreement between SOU and the University of Guanajuato makes it possible for students to earn the Maestría en Alta Gestión from UG as they complete the MiM.
Students participating in this program are Mexican managers in private, public, and nonprofit sectors brought together to learn more about current best practices in management, and to compare and contrast practices that vary from sector to sector. The result is a rich, synergistic learning environment where an understanding of effective management practice is expanded in a variety of contexts, not bound into narrowly defined areas of technical specialization or academic theory.
The degree is fully accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). NWCCU is the principal academic accrediting organization for all universities in the Pacific Northwest. NWCCU accreditation is recognized by all other regional accrediting bodies in the United States and internationally. ACBSP is a specialized international accrediting organization that reviews the quality and integrity of business degree programs. ACBSP accredits all business programs at all degree levels such as associate degrees in accounting to doctorate degrees in management.
The MiM program is a 45 credit-hour course of study consisting of eight 3-credit core courses, one 3-credit seminar, a 3-credit capstone course, and 15 credits of elective courses.
Southern Oregon University will teach eight core courses in Guanajuato and UG will present two core courses and five elective courses over the duration of the program. Each course lasts approximately 10 weeks following the SOU academic calendar and will generally consist of three parts: pre-session assignments to be completed prior to the class sessions, four class sessions, and final projects to be completed after the last class session. Class sessions are held on Friday evening and all day Saturday on two consecutive weekends. Instructors will use Moodle, an online instructional tool, to facilitate communication during all three phases of the course. The syllabus for each course will detail specific requirements for assignments and final projects.
The MiM program is designed to serve the educational needs of experienced managers. To qualify for admission to the program, candidates must have:
(1) A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. No specific academic or technical field is stipulated.
(2) At least three years of increasing supervisory experience.
(3) In addition, candidates must meet SOU’s English language proficiency standard for international students – minimum score of 76 on the TOEFL ibt (Internet-based test), or minimum of 6.0 on the IELTS with minimum score of 5.5 in each of the 4 sub-skills.
SOU Application and Admission
Candidates must submit official transcripts (not copies) from the university that granted their bachelor’s degree and original copies of TOEFL or IELTS scores. The applicant must also submit an application for admission directly to SOU International Office, including the associated application fee. Click this link to apply.
Candidates for admission will be pre-screened by the Master in Management Committee at UG created within the terms of the approved academic document. Applicants who are approved by the UG MiM Management Committee will then be evaluated by the SOU MiM administration to verify compliance with the English requirement and undergraduate degree transcript.
All admission materials must be received, reviewed and approved by SOU and UG before a student may enroll for coursework. Only fully admitted students will be allowed to be a part of a cohort and take any MiM course.
Enrollment Procedure for UG Students at SOU
