“It is a real honor to be selected as a National McNair Scholar,” said Dr. Yamaguchi. “We are so proud of you, Shannon!”

The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program supports students who aspire to complete a doctoral program (Ph.D or Ed.D). Currently, Southern Oregon University is among 187 colleges and universities supported by the federal government to help students pursue post-graduate education. By providing support and resources to students in each cohort, a strong foundation is developed for a future successful career. Individuals who earn doctoral degrees typically experience a higher employment rate, and an increased lifetime salary at an estimated value of $3.4 million.

To qualify for the program, the student must be a first-generation college graduate or be from a group that is traditionally underrepresented in graduate education. Members of the cohort participate in a series of McNair seminars and mentorship activities to enhance their preparation for graduate school.
