Brandon Givens and COMM216 students in the studio at the Digital Media Center

Students learn by doing in COMM216 - Studio Production for Film & Video, where Comm Program instructor Brandon Givens guides aspiring media professionals through a fun and engaging course.

From setting the stage to manning the cameras to crafting polished greenscreen special effects, students get a chance to see and practice everything that happens in order to create fantastic video content in the studio at SOU’s Digital Media Center.

“Students learn the basics of production by immersive, hands-on, practical application in a real studio environment,” said Givens, currently the DMC's manager, and formerly a producer for KTVL in Medford.“I love seeing the students go from mystified observers to active creators in mere weeks.”

The Fall 2018 section of COMM216 created a homegrown version of The Office, using the people and places of the DMC to evoke the documentary-style production techniques popularized by the legendary sitcom.

Students who complete COMM216 are also well-positioned to fill numerous paid student jobs at the DMC, contributing to real-world television and video production projects, and building up their professional credentials.
