Let’s talk about COMM324 - Nonverbal Communication!

In this Communication course at Southern Oregon University, students dive into the non-linguistic aspects of human communication through academic study, and also by moving around and actively engaging with SOU’s campus. Via a series of interactive in-class activities, COMM324 promotes awareness and skill development in nonverbal communication. The Circle of Trusting Touch activity in COMM324Comm Program instructor Erica Knotts led a typically action-packed session in February, with activities including the Circle of Trusting Touch, and a Walk In Nature.

The Circle of Trusting Touch involves students letting go and embracing the unknown. Students were told, at random, to close their eyes and walk across a circle continuously, entrusting their safety to their fellow classmates. Remaining students formed the circle and redirected the students walking inside the circle, keeping them safe.

“I enjoy the Circle of Trusting Touch because it requires students to rely on one another and also how to look out for each other,” said Professor Erica Knotts. “It shows that we can support one another through action, not just our words. It’s a reminder that we need others in our lives.”

Walk In Nature activity in COMM325 - Nonverbal CommunicationThe Walk In Nature requires students to leave their cellular devices in the classroom, and just go for a walk around campus. Students observe their surroundings while staying absolutely silent, making note of anything that they might not notice on a regular day. Students then return to the classroom and debrief in small groups about their silent adventures around campus.

“The nature walk reminds students the importance of taking time to be present,” said Knotts. “So often we are rushing around and trying to get everything done that we forget how to be still. Taking just a few minutes to slow down, walk in silence, and observe where you are is great for our mental health and self-care. It leaves us feeling refreshed and ready to take on our next adventure!”
