Kristin Hocevar, assistant professor in health communication at SOU

Now that her first term on campus has wrapped up, we finally have time to welcome our newest full-time faculty member to the Comm program at SOU: Assistant Professor Kristin Hocevar has joined our faculty, where she will primarily contribute to our concentration in Communication Studies, and SOU’s new interdisciplinary program in Healthcare Administration.

Hocevar comes to Ashland most recently from the University of California - Merced, and she completed her Ph.D. at the University of California - Santa Barbara.

In addition to core communication courses such as Interpersonal Communication, Dr. Hocevar will take over COMM346 - Health Communication, and is launching new upper division courses aligned with the Healthcare Administration major. These include Risk & Crisis Communication in Winter term, and Health, the Internet & Technology in Spring term.

“It’s been really great to have the opportunity to develop a couple of new classes for the department that are a crossover between health and communication,” Hocevar said. In the spring course, students can look forward to developing social media campaigns related to healthy body image.

Before grad school, Hocevar spent several years working for the Public Broadcasting Service, eventually traveling across the country and producing video with Antiques Roadshow.

Since her arrival in the Rogue Valley, Dr. Hocevar and her husband Alex Markov have been enjoying all that Ashland has to offer including Lithia Park, the good food and lovely atmosphere.

“I’m still a small-town person, and I’ve lived in bigger cities like L.A., but it’s just so crowded and it’s impossible to get everywhere,” said Hocevar. “It just doesn’t get any better than Ashland.”
