Leadership Development UGS 299 CRN 2313 is open for students to earn 1 credit per term for fall 2017, winter 2018, and spring 2018. This is a hybrid course designed to give students space and time to study leadership knowledge and apply this to practical learning experiences. The course will meet every other Monday night and require attendance one Saturday (10/28) for a nationally recognized leadership seminar that will be hosted at SOU.
What will students gain?
The leadership development course sequence is designed to prepare students for leadership roles and responsibilities at SOU and beyond.
In this sequence, students will examine leadership language, styles, and theory. Students will apply this knowledge as they develop their personal leadership styles, values, ethics, motivations, and personal strengths. Students will explore intersections of personal and social identities while gaining knowledge of the importance of a global perspective. Students will practice and further develop their skills in communication; decision-making; group dynamics, followership and flexibility.
Students will explore case studies, participate in group dialogue, and experiential learning activities to uncover strategies for communication and decision making that reinforce their personal values and ethics. Students will discover issues of diversity and equity and link this to their collaboration with team members. Building from students' personal and unique learning interests and needs, they will apply course material to meet both their short-term and long-term goals for leadership and personal development.
What will students do?
Fall Term: Students will evaluate several leadership theories. Attended a nationally recognized on-campus leadership seminar, Catalyst. Students will construct a their personal leadership philosophy and discuss the impact of one's personal identities and the impact on members around them.
Winter Term: Students will collaborate with each other and the Multicultural Resource Center to implement a student-run conference. Students will enlist others to develop and embrace a common vision. Students will apply their initiative while looking outward for feedback and respond with innovative ways for improvement.
Spring Term: Students will assemble and deliver a presentation at SOAR; they will demonstrate and apply The Four Agreements; and actively participate in planning the Raider Academy Awards – a campus-wide student recognition ceremony.
