English Proficiency for Non-Native Speakers
Southern Oregon University provides non-native English speakers assistance in developing the writing and communication skills needed for a successful university experience. The coursework is developed and taught by faculty committed to international education.
Students whose native language is not English are required to take English 101 in their first term or regular university classes and English 102 in their second term of university level classes unless they have a TOEFL score of at least 92 iBT. This policy applies to all non-native English speakers enrolled at Southern Oregon University, regardless of citizenship or residency status. This series of courses also fulfills the Arts & Letters Exploration Sequence of the SOU General Education Requirements.
You may be exempt from the SOU English proficiency requirements if you meet any of the following criteria:
- You are not seeking a degree from SOU.
- You have submitted an official TOEFL score at or above 580 pBT or 92 iBT.
- You have completed an AA, BA, BS or other advanced degree at an accredited US university, junior college or community college.
- You have completed Writing 121 and 122 or equivalent courses at an accredited US university, junior college or community college.
If you believe you have been mistakenly required to meet the SOU English proficiency requirements, please contact the International Student Advisor in the Office of International Programs.
