Jessica Bartel is studying psychology, she anticipates graduating magna cum laude in June 2023 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Jessica earned her medical assistant and phlebotomy certifications in 2020 but decided to continue her studies to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Jessica returned to college as a Ford Family Foundation Scholar, where she found a new sense of determination. Today Jessica anticipates earning her master’s degree as well as a Ph.D. Currently, in her education, she is learning and exploring the fundamentals of psychology. During this time, Jessica has become interested in individuals with a dual diagnosis of mental health issues and substance abuse problems. Jessica would like to understand why humans do what they do and why each human is so different. She would like to research addictions, compulsive behaviors, and co-occurring disorders. Jessica wants to be able to help individuals with these disorders because they are often underserved in society. To best serve this community, she hopes to earn a Ph.D. after completing a Master degree in Mental Health and Counselling. With a Ph.D. Jessica wants to help facilitate better outcomes for a client base and community. Jessica would like to pursue an academic career that would allow her to teach others. As a first-generation, low-income student, Jessica would be the first in her family to get an advanced degree.
