What We Do

The Trans and Queer Training program offers trainings, workshops, and consultations to local and regional organizations on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender and sexuality topics. We aim to create inclusive spaces and to promote education on gender and sexuality in our community.

Trainings Offered

We offer trainings on many trans and queer topics. Our basic trainings include:

  • Queer 101: An Overview of Sexuality and Gender
  • Understanding Nonbinary Genders
  • Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression
  • Intersectionality
  • Trans and Nonbinary Youth
  • Using Gender Inclusive Language
  • Transforming Organizations: Gender and Sexuality Affirming Spaces

Trainings can also be tailored specifically to your organization's needs, around areas such as:

  • Healthcare, both medical and behavioral/mental health
  • Education, both K-12 and college/university
  • Anti-violence programs
  • Non-profit organizations
  • LGBTQ+ organizations
  • Sexual and reproductive health programs

Consultation Services Offered 

In addition to trainings, we also provide consultation services in various fields for focused development.

  • Forms: We can review or help create organizational forms to best support trans and queer people.
  • Spaces: We can help you to review your spaces to ensure they are welcoming for trans and queer people.
  • Organizational assessments: We can assess your organization to help determine your needs to best support trans and queer people.
  • Surveys and research: We can review or write external surveys to seek information about trans and queer people.

Trainers

Carey Jean Sojka, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Southern Oregon University. Her research and teaching interests include transgender studies, embodiment, gender, sexuality, race, disability, and fat studies. Carey founded the Trans and Queer Trainings program based on her work facilitating community trainings on transgender, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer issues in our region. She/Hers
