What are the Degree Requirements?
A bachelor’s degree consists of 180 credits. 60 of those 180 credits must be upper divison. The 180 credits are typically split up into three sections (see chart below). University Studies is SOU’s term for general education. You will need to complete your major requirements - approximately 60 credits, but every major is a little different. Then you may complete a minor, which is optional, or electives to complete 180 credits.

Lower division = 100 and 200 level courses
Upper division = 300 and 400 level courses
To graduate in four years, students must average 15 credits per term.
How can I meet the Lower Division University Studies Requirements?
There are three ways to meet SOU's lower division University Studies requirements:
1. Completion of a Transfer Degree - AAOT, ASOT, OTM, CSU-GE, IGETC, DTA
OR
2. Completion of the General Education requirements from an accredited four-year institution OR

What type of degree can I earn?
For most majors, you have the option to earn either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. Here are the requirements:

12 credits of a foreign language at the second year college level or higher (C-or better) or 4 years consecutively in high school. |
At least two courses (7 or more credits) in math, designated programming, statistics, or logic classes (C- or better). |

Have I met the Admission Foreign Language Requirement?
If you graduated from high school after 1996, you’ll need to satisfy this requirement. Two options are:
- Two years of the same second language in high school (C- or better).
OR
- Two terms of the same second language at the college level. E.g., SPAN 101 and SPAN 102 (C- or better).
