Welcome to SOU School of Education Special Education Programs!
Thank you for your interest in the Southern Oregon University Special Education Programs. We believe the programs we offer will provide the breadth and depth of preparation, strong knowledge base, and extensive field-based application to produce highly qualified special educators. The programs we currently offer are:
- SPED Preliminary Teaching License Program for those seeking the Oregon Preliminary teaching license with the endorsement in Special Education
- SPED Added Endorsement Program for currently licensed teachers seeking to add the Special Education endorsement. A Masters degree in Education can also be a part of this program.
- Autism Specialist Program for currently licensed special educators or speech language pathologists with a communication disorders endorsement seeking to become an Autism Specialist, or for others wishing to gain skills and knowledge about ASD
- Applied Behavioral Analysis and Autism Spectrum Disorder Emphasis (ABA/ASD) Program.
The field of special education is an exciting and expanding profession, and the need for trained professionals to serve those with exceptionalities is greater than ever. Of course, the demands made on those in the profession are greater than ever as well. We feel our candidates are among the best prepared to meet those demands.

If you are interested in becoming a special educator, adding to your current teaching license, or becoming an Autism Specialist, we welcome your application to our programs. Your academic record, test scores, the quality of your essays, experience with children with exceptionalities, and your recommendations will be major factors in the selection process.
The application deadlines for each of the Programs are posted on the respective web pages. The major considerations in meeting the application deadline are having your entrance test scores reported to us on time, completion of any prerequisite course work, and letters of recommendation. These should be given immediate attention if you plan to apply for the upcoming year.
