Our English Program fuses traditional and innovative approaches to learning. Set in the active and artistic community of Ashland, we offer a broad range of creative classroom experiences that emphasize a foundation of critical thinking, literary analysis, and writing skills of all types.

We are located on the second floor of Central Hall. Besides instructor offices, we have two main resource centers: the main office and the William Decker Writing Studio.

Located in Central Hall 261, the main office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Summer office hours are Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. The Division Assistant or a student receptionist can assist you with finding forms for planning your major path, finding an English Program advisor, coordinating with instructors, and finding answers to any administrative questions you might have. They always have a healthy supply of major applications, Academic Advising Plans, up-to-date lists of current courses, and information on faculty office hours and teaching schedules. The Program hires work-study students as assistants in the office. Check the job listings board on the SOU Career Development Services site at www.sou.edu/studentemployment and keep your eyes open for postings on the bulletin board outside the English. Feel free to stop by the office or call (541) 552-6181.

William Decker Writing Studio, Central Hall 240

Named in honor of former editor and teacher William Decker, the studio provides a place where students and faculty can work on individual projects, utilize an extensive writing resource library, and sponsor a number of readings, presentations, and workshops designed to enhance writing. During his Winter 2005 visit, Kim Stafford dubbed the Decker "a making place." Comfortable furniture and soft lighting elicits creative discourse between all persons of the learning community.
