Academic experience required depends on the practicum. General childcare requires some experience with the age group student intends to work with. Practicum students in childcare roles will always have a staff member present to support them. Sports or fitness related practicum students must have a sound knowledge of the activity being led.

Most commonly, psychology students have had practicum experiences working with youth­, in either childcare, sports, or enrichment programs. We offer a great opportunity to learn first-hand about child development.

Resolve - Community Dispute Resolution Program (CDRP)

What length of commitment do you require or prefer of practicum students? It varies depending on the type of work you want to do. At least one term is required, but the longer the better.


How many hours a week do you require or prefer? Number of hours isn't as important as when you are available. Monday mornings form 7:30 AM to ­noon for small claims, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 PM for the juvenile victim/offender program. The education program generally occurs during the school day. Family mediations are often in the afternoon or early evenings.


What academic or related experience do you require of the undergraduate practicum students (year in school, specific classes, previous work or training, etc.)? Basic Mediation training is required. Some conflict resolution training or a willingness to participate in our training is needed to be a volunteer for the education or victim/offender program.


Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students: For the student with basic mediation training and a relatively flexible schedule, we can provide a custom program that involves a student in all aspects of the organization. Students can work in any of the 4 programs and/or become involved in the administrative aspect of the organization.

Community Works - Helpline

Please briefly describe the kind of work that the agency does: Helpline is a 24-hour crisis intervention, information, and referral service. Callers who are emotionally distressed are first to deal with their feelings. We work with callers to assess how their needs might be met or how their problems can be solved. After resolution is reached, we refer callers to human services agencies that may be able to help. Helpline provides 24-hour access to Dunn House and Rape Crisis. Helpline also has a reassurance service that calls elderly clients every few days to check on their safety and wellbeing.

What academic or related experience do you require of the undergraduate practicum students (year in school, specific classes, previous work or training, etc.)? A desire to learn and be of service to others. Problem solving, active listening skills and ability to set boundaries are all important skills that we like to see people have in this environment.

Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students. Students become aware of appropriate resources in Jackson County to give as referrals to callers. Students become trained how to log and code phone calls, call senior citizens, many homebound, and check on their well-being. We deal with child abuse, suicide, domestic violence, relationship problems, and self-esteem issues. Students get an overview of the human services delivery system.

Community Works - Sexual Assaults Victims Services (SAVS)

Community Works - Volunteer Opportunities that Require an Evaluation Period

Court Advocacy—helping victims prepare for Restraining Orders and other protective orders and supporting them through the Court procedures. Court advocacy is very challenging, so we require volunteers start on other programs for 3 to 6 months to evaluate their suitability to the job.

Transitional Living Program— The Transitional Living Program (TLP) addresses the complex needs of youth, ages 16-29, in Jackson County who are experiencing homelessness or are the verge of homelessness. The TLP provides safe and long term housing, case management, advocacy and weekly Life Skills classes, TLP works individually with clients to assist them to work towards sustainable success and change. TLP advocacy is very challenging, so we require volunteers start on other programs for 3 months to evaluate their suitability to the job.

Please briefly describe the kind of work that the agency does: CASA volunteers receive 30-40 hours of training, are sworn in by the court, and are assigned to advocate in court for the best interest of an abused or neglected child. Court Appointed Special Advocates are parties to the case with the attorneys and social workers. They investigate and assess the needs of a child and make their recommendations to a judge.

How many hours a week do you require or prefer? An average of 10 hours a week. This involves duties such as data entry, taking notes in court, help around the office, working in excel and access database platforms, answering the phone, general support for the program team and volunteers.


What academic or related experience do you require of the undergraduate practicum students (year in school, specific classes, previous work or training, etc.)? Practicum students should be in their junior year or 21 years old. Good communication skills are required as well as a strong sense of commitment and the ability to follow through.


Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students. Practicum students will learn firsthand the workings of our social service systems and courtroom procedures. They are trained in the dynamics of child abuse, as well as development psychology and theories of attachment, separation and loss, cultural humility, the legal process, and etc. They will network with foster parents, social workers, defense and district attorneys, mental health and medical professionals, law enforcement and parole and probation officers. Students learn good communication, negotiation, and interviewing skills. They become expert observers and objective writers. They work as a paraprofessional in the legal and social service system in Jackson County. They are highly respected by the court and make a tremendous difference in the life of an abused or neglected child.


Are there any specific tests, evaluations, or documentation needed in applying for placement with your organization? Training program has to be completed before you may begin working. It is offered 4 times a year. Classes are 4 hours a week for 7 weeks. We require completion of an application, interview process and a criminal history check. We also check all references offered. Exceptions to completing the training can be made by speaking with the Director of Programs.

  • Violation of Protection Order Assistance: Assist victims of protection order violations by providing court accompaniment, hearing and sentencing information and safety planning.

Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students: Students will shadow a CADC II for assessments, service planning, individual sessions, and groups. They receive 1 hour per week of dedicated clinical supervision. When their clinical supervisor feels they are ready, students will be given the opportunity to run groups, and depending on skill level attained/supervisor evaluation and length of practicum, may also get to conduct assessments and individual sessions independently with clients.

Are there any specific tests, evaluations, or documentation needed in applying for placement with your organization? Verification of sobriety if in recovery; practicum students are selected just as a regular employee in that they are expected to provide a cover letter and resume, and interview with clinical staff; will also need to have good computer skills, as timely and accurate charting is a necessary part of the position.

Previous experience: work in the above fields, volunteer work in community programs, work with at-risk children, and/or general job experience where maintaining a good relationship with the public is vital.

Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students. We provide students with general office skills, work with confidential information, reality-based field work with clients that have been emotionally traumatized or assaulted by victimization.  We also give the students the opportunity to work with staff members who deal with difficult situations and people on a daily basis.

Felony charge or record is not acceptable.  Also, they must sign an ethics statement and confidentiality agreement.
