Is ACADEMY a Good Fit?
ACADEMY is an enrichment program for students who can benefit from challenges beyond the standard school curriculum. If your child is identified as talented and gifted by his or her school, information about ACADEMY may be sent home from school. In some cases, the school may not have distributed the information and you may request more ACADEMY information directly from Pre-College Youth Programs at 541-552-6452.
The main concern of school staff, parents prompting students for the program, and for ACADEMY staff evaluating student applications, is whether the program will be a positive experience for the student. If you feel your child is a candidate for ACADEMY but are not sure, ask his or her teacher or give us a call.
Which Session Do I Apply for?
Session 1 is for students completing grades 5 and 6.
Session 2 is for students completing grades 7 and 8.
The sessions run concurrently, during the last week of June.
When Is the Application Deadline?
Because of the popularity of ACADEMY, we encourage students to complete their applications early and submit them in a timely fashion. Applications will not be reviewed until all documentation has been received and files are complete. The Priority Application Deadline is April 15, 2019. The General Application Deadline is April 30, 2019. Applications submitted after the general deadline will be added to our waitlist and reviewed as space becomes available. We will notify accepted applicants beginning in the Spring.

When Will Students Be Notified of Acceptance?
Applicants will be notified as applications are received and reviewed. No applications are reviewed until after the priority deadline. It generally takes 2-6 weeks from the priority deadline for a determination of acceptance to be made. They will be reviewed in order of completion. We review hundreds of applications a year so be patient in this process. No application is reviewed until all parts of the application are received.
How Much Does it Cost to Attend ACADEMY?
ACADEMY is a self-supporting program funded through student tuition.
New Student tuition is $875 (this includes a first-time applicant non-refundable application fee of $25)
Returning Student tuition is $850.
Junior Counselor Intern tuition is $850.
Junior Counselor tuition is $600.

How Is Tuition Assistance Determined?
Any Oregon student who has been accepted for ACADEMY is eligible for ACADEMY tuition assistance on the basis of demonstrated financial need. Tuition Assistance should be requested as part of the student's online application. All tuition assistance forms must be received by May 3, 2019. Because assistance funds for ACADEMY are limited, we do ask that schools and parent groups explore possible sources of scholarship aid in their local areas. ACADEMY awards are generally between $50 and $250. We offer a $25 sibling discount and offer tuition assistance for students in need. Applications for tuition assistance are completed within the main ACADEMY application. Students seeking tuition assistance must have their completed application by May 3rd, 2019 for tuition assistance consideration.
When Are Students Notified about Tuition Assistance Awards?
Students are notified about tuition assistance after June 1, 2019. Due to the quantity of applications ever year, we unfortunately cannot notify about tution assistance earlier than June 1.
When Should Payment of the Tuition Occur?
Tuition is due only after acceptance. Payment information is included in acceptance notificatons. We accept cash, check and Visa/MasterCard online.
What Happens if Have to Cancel?
Sometimes conflicts come up! We appreciate hearing as soon as possible since there may be a student on the waiting list we need to notify. A $50 cancellation fee may be assessed.
What about Living Groups?
Student’s living Group Counselor will become a very important person to your child. The counselors are college students who have experience in youth programs and counseling. They've been selected for their leadership skills and enthusiasm for working with young people. There are separate residence halls for boys and girls. Parents are given the oppertunity to meet with their child’s counselor during the check-in time to ask questions and share information and concerns.
What about Requesting a Roommate?
One of the best things about ACADEMY is the new and lasting friendships students make during their week on campus. We do accept roommate requests; however we encourage your child to meet new people. If your child wishes to request a roommate, there is a section on the online application to do so. Requests must be noted by both students on their applications. Please plan accordingly, requests not made by both students will not be honored.
Where/What Are the Residential Halls ACADEMY Students Stay in?
All ACADEMY students stay on the Southern Oregon University campus in Shasta Hall within Raider Village. Students stay in suite style rooms and share an immediate room with their roommate. Roommates share a full bathroom with two other roommates. All suites are single sex. Students stay in rooms in close vicinity of their Senior Counselor, who stays in their own room independent of all students. Please indicate on your application or call our office for additional living accommodations.
What Will I Eat?
All meals will be served in The Hawk, which is part of the residential Raider Village. Students select from a wide variety of nutritious and well balanced foods. A vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are always available. Accommodations can always be made for students with food allergies or sensitivities. Dietary restricitons and allergies are reported as part of the accepted student paperwork.
