2017 Academy Students Science

Is ACADEMY a good fit?

ACADEMY is an enrichment program for students who can benefit from challenges beyond the standard school curriculum. In some cases, information about ACADEMY may be sent home from school. However, if your school has not distributed information and you think your child would benefit from the program, you may request more ACADEMY information directly from Pre-College Youth Programs by emailing us at youthprograms@sou.edu.

The main priority of school staff, parents, and the ACADEMY staff who evaluate student applications is whether the program will be a positive experience for the student. If you feel your child is a candidate for ACADEMY but are not sure, ask his or her teacher or give us a call.

Which session do I apply for?

Session 1 is for students completing grades 5 and 6.
Session 2 is for students completing grades 7 and 8.
Junior Counselors are students completing grades 10-12.

Both sessions run concurrently.

New for 2024 - Day Camp option: For Session 1, 5th grade students only. Students who apply to participate in the Day Camp version will arrive each morning at 7:45 a.m. before classes begin, will participate in classes and workshops throughout the day, enjoy lunch and dinner with your fellow ACADEMY participants, and will depart after dinner and before evening activities begin each evening. There is a question in the application for Session 1 applicants where you can let us know your preference of: 1) the Day Camp option, or 2) overnight experience. Camp fees will be less for the Day Camp option since you won’t be joining us for breakfast or staying overnight, but we are including you in lunch and dinner.

When is the application deadline?

Because of the popularity of ACADEMY, we encourage students to complete their applications early and submit them in a timely fashion. Applications will not be reviewed until all documentation has been received and files are complete. The General Application Deadline (see below) is April 30th, 2024 at 5pm. We will continue to accept applications after the May 27th deadline until we can no longer. We review applications in order of completion.

IMPORTANT DATES:

  • Priority Application Deadline – April 15
  • General Application Deadline – April 30
  • Tuition Assistance Award Notifications – After June 1
  • No applications accepted after May 27. Applications received after April 30 will be added to our waitlist and reviewed as space becomes available.
  • We will notify successful applicants beginning in early spring.

When will students be notified of acceptance?

Applicants will be notified as applications are received and reviewed. Applications will be reviewed in order of completion. We review hundreds of applications a year so please be patient in this process. No application is reviewed until all parts of the application are received so please keep tabs on your application and check in with us periodically if you have questions about the status.

What about Living Groups/Counselors?

Students are supervised in 10-12 co-gender Living Groups (unless you select the Day Camp option). Your student’s Living Group Counselor will become a very important person to your student. The counselors are college students who have experience in youth programs and counseling. They've been selected for their leadership skills and enthusiasm for working with young people. Parents are given the opportunity to meet with their student's counselor during the check-in time to ask questions and share information and concerns.

What about requesting a roommate?

One of the best things about ACADEMY is the new and lasting friendships students make during their week on campus. We do

If your child wishes to request a roommate, there is a section on the post-acceptance forms to do so. Requests must be noted by both students on their applications. Please plan accordingly. Requests not made by both students may not be honored.

Where/What are the Residential Halls where ACADEMY students stay?

ACADEMY students stay on the Southern Oregon University campus. Students stay in rooms in close vicinity of their Senior Counselor, who stays in their own room independent of all students. Students live in single gender halls. Please indicate on your application or call our office for additional living accommodations.
