What about COVID-19?

SOU is operating under specific protocols to ensure community safety and compliance with current state and federal guidelines. Please note that students will need to abide by the following guidelines:

  • Proof of vaccination will be required to participate
    • Exemptions to this policy may be allowed, and will be handled on a case by case basis, and will require additional documentation.
    • In the case of an approved exemption families will still need to provide proof of a negative at home antigen COVID test taken no more than 24 hours before arrival at SOU for camp.
  • Masks are currently not required to participate in programs on campus, but are recommended.

These requirements, and camp formats, are subject to change depending on state and federal guidelines.

What is Konaway Nika Tillicum?

Konaway Nika Tillicum, which means "All My Relations" in Chinook Trade Jargon, is traditionally an eight-day academic program exploring a broad range of classes, lectures, cultural experiences, and recreational activities for Native American students.

Students accepted into the program join us on the Southern Oregon University (SOU) campus in Ashland, Oregon to be challenged by creative and imaginative instructors and peers. Students spend time with tribal elders and leaders during classes, activities and outdoor presentations. Students stay in the SOU dorms and eat at The Hawk dining hall and expereince life on a University campus. Students arrive Saturday afternoon for check-in and orientation. On Saturday and Sunday students participate in outdoor cultural experiences. Classes begin on Monday and continue through Friday. Each student's daily schedule includes four one-hour and twenty-minute classes plus special presentations. Konaway Nika Tillicum students choose course offerings from Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Fine and Performing Arts, and Cultural classes. After-class programs coordinate with in-class activities to include supervised recreation as well as cultural events. Special events include attending an Oregon Shakespeare Festival play and in some years, a lake or pool trip. Have more questions? View our FAQ page

Tuition for Konaway Nika Tillicum

Konaway is a completely self-supported program, generating funds each year through grants, donations, and fundraisers. These funds cover the cost for students to attend. In the past, each household has been required to pay a $75.00 fee upon student acceptance, to reserve their spot in the academy. Due to the hardships of the pandemic, this student fee has been suspended for 2022. Many students may be eligible for state, federal or tribal funding to offset the cost for student attendance. Please inquire with the appropriate agencies as to whether your child is eligible.
